The Loss of Consensus (and the Rise of Freedom)

February 4, 2012

It seems it’s getting harder and harder to find things that everyone agrees on. The mainstream is dispersing and “normal” is getting harder and harder to identify, let alone define.

One implication of this is that just about any belief can be supported by some social proof: no matter what you’d like to believe, you can probably find at least one person or organization who agrees with you. At the same time, uniform belief in just about anything is hard, if not impossible, to find. So, unless you narrow your vision to a selected subset of people, social proof is insufficient to either prove anything for certain or rule anything out.

What does this mean for you? That society and culture at large no longer define for you what to believe and how to exist (as they did for most of your ancestors)? How are you enjoying this freedom?
