Technological Progress: A Means or an End?

March 3, 2012

The answer to this question should be obvious: improving technology is a means to improving human happiness and quality of life, not an end in itself. Why is it then that we live in a society where our technological capacity to meet our needs (the means) has far outpaced our quality of life (the end)?

One symptom of this is the fact that while we have the technological means to provide for the needs of every human being on the planet, forty percent of us live without access to electricity, and one hundred percent of the rest of us still have to engage in exploitative labor relationships in order to have the money (permission) to access the benefits of our technology. If this isn’t a sign that our technological expertise is being misapplied, I don’t know what is.
