The Whole Idea of Age Segregation

Age segregation shows up in many forms, both within and among institutions, but its basic function is to keep younger separated from older, so the younger don’t learn from the older. But what purpose does this serve, in a fluid society? What do age restricted learning barriers really support? What does age unrestricted exploratory learning and direct transmission of experience allow?

In schools, the operative philosophy is that kids should learn about “adult” things from other kids or, ideally, not at all, but certainly not from adults. But what could be the possible drawbacks of leaving it to this playground “shadow” university to teach young people about sex, drugs, and other taboo subjects?  Not to mention the possible drawbacks of a design that inhibits peer-to-peer learning across age differences greater than one year?
