Shah On Religious Followers

January 12, 2013

Excerpted from The Commanding Self, by Idries Shah:

The People of God

A Mongol conqueror sent spies disguised as merchants into a country to bring him back information about its government.

This was their report:

‘In that country they have not one ruler, but two.  The first one is called the King, and his employees are well-dressed, well-fed and enjoy their lives.  The other ruler is called God.  The people who follow him are garbed in dull clothes, have long faces, and are under-nourished.

‘We have not been able to discover the reason for the institution of the two rulers over one country, but we know which one, given an equal opportunity, any newcomer would prefer.’
