Shah On Humility

January 14, 2013

Excerpted from The Commanding Self, by Idries Shah:

Humility

A certain missionary, obsessed by humility, went to a contemporary Dervish, and the following dialogue ensued:

‘Is there anything worse than lack of humility?’

‘Yes, drawing attention to lack of humility in others is worse.’

‘And what is better than modesty?

‘Asserting yourself when self-assertion is necessary.’

‘And when is it necessary?’

‘When jealous people want you to be “humble” so that they can silence you.’
