Sympathy and Agreement

You don’t need to agree with someone to sympathize with them, you just need to understand their perceptions and where they come from. So it is possible to sympathize with someone you don’t agree with.

On the other hand, you don’t need to sympathize with someone to agree with them. You can share someone’s perceptions without sharing their feelings.

The distinction comes in handy when someone is wanting sympathy and we are giving agreement, or vice versa. This can lead to seemingly inexplicable frustration if you don’t recognize the difference.
