Does It Need To Be Said

September 7, 2013

…in order to be true?

Sometimes we say things because we need to convince ourselves more than we need to convince someone else:

“I’m afraid that’s just not going to work.”

“You’ll never be able to find anyone to help you with that.”

“That’s never happened, and it never will.”

And sometimes we say things that make themselves untrue the moment we say them:

“I’m not going to participate in this discussion.” — You are participating by saying so.

“I don’t care what you think.” — You care for them to know that you don’t care.

“That’s not worth a response.” — That was a response.
