The Bounty Of Trust

September 18, 2013

One of the greatest factors that will allow the promise of technology to be fulfilled is the bounty of trust. The bounty of trust is the fruit of cooperation, the payoff that stems from people placing justified trust in one another.

In groups small and large, in ways tiny and huge, the bounty of trust pays enormous dividends, and the lack of it incurs crippling costs. We must not only account for the loss of life due to violence, we must also account for the resources devoted to protecting against violence. We must not only account for the loss and destruction of property due to theft and fraud, we must also account for the resources consumed in preventing and punishing theft and fraud. We must account for all the efforts expended in manipulating and exploiting one another, for lack of trust in the judgment of others. We must account for all the opportunities for one person to help another that go unfulfilled, for lack of trust between individuals. And we must account for the psychological cost of billions of people living in isolation and fear.

So much of our collective will is thwarted by itself, that technology would need not advance one iota in order to fulfill its promise, if the bounty of trust were to be brought to harvest. (Tweet this)
