Your One Inalienable Asset

September 26, 2013

The Unitarian Universalist philosophy, along with others, stipulates “The inherent worth and dignity of every person”. This can be taken axiomatically, or it can be taken one level deeper, as stemming from something of value that every person has.

What is your one inalienable asset? What is the one source of value you have that can never be taken away, that can never be lost, that can only go up in value, never down, that is unique to you and that only you can contribute?

Your point of view. Every person who has ever lived has had one, and all of them have been valuable, unique, and irreplaceable. Your point of view is something that only you can provide, and it is valuable to all of us. Even a child, even an intellectually or physically disabled person, even the worst kind of hardened criminal, carries a unique and valuable portion of the entire human experience.

All other assets are merely icing on the cake. Health, intelligence, good looks, charm, skills, knowledge, ownership, these only add to what any person can contribute, but the only two ingredients necessary to improve your life through contribution to others are passion and point of view.
