Emotion Comes From Meaning

October 11, 2013

The space between perception and emotion is occupied by a process of interpretation. This process is partly conscious and partly guided by pre-existing associations. These associations are what we call meaning.

Think of a piano with the keys, the chords, and the links between them. The keys are our perceptions, the chords are our emotional responses, and the process of creating the connections, which key links to which chord, and with what degree of sensitivity, is the process of assigning meaning.

Life presses the keys, but the chords that are struck are the result of a semi-conscious, and therefore directable, process of association.
