Communication Style Or Skill?

October 17, 2013

Often we chalk up miscommunication to differences in communication style. We think that we have difficulty in communicating with someone because our communication style is different than theirs.

But style and effectiveness are two different things. Style is how you communicate, skill is how well you communicate. Regardless of your style, the effectiveness of your communication is determined by how readily others are able to understand you. So if you are having difficulty in understanding or being understood, it is not a difference in style that is the culprit, it is a mismatch of skill. Rather than trying to change your style, you’re better off focusing on improving your skill.
