Sex Negativity

October 18, 2013

Accusing someone of having (or enjoying) sex as a way of insulting them is a form of externalized sex negativity.

Feeling insulted by such accusations is a symptom of internalized sex negativity.

In other words, both statements in the following exchange demonstrate sex negativity:

“You’re a slut!”

“How dare you insult me!”

It takes a great deal of conditioning to make us ashamed of our sexuality, and a great deal more to undo the damage once it has been done.
