Why My Facebook Profile Is Completely Public

October 31, 2013

I’m somewhere between the nihilist and the sage.

I understand that there are people who have legitimate, unavoidable privacy concerns, but for every one of them I think there are ten who are reflexively paranoid.

I value Facebook for the ability to connect with people. However you look at it, connectivity is an asset.

My Facebook Profile is completely public. For any data that I want to keep private, I have a very simple way of doing so: I don’t put it on Facebook.

Of course, there’s the issue of someone taking a photo of me, putting it on Facebook, and tagging me in it. At least, for some people that might be an issue. For me it isn’t. Since I follow the rule coined by Johnny Soporno as “I will never do anything I wouldn’t do”, being embarrassed isn’t an issue for me.

And so far, receiving too much attention (either positive or negative) hasn’t been an issue for me either. In fact, I would be perfectly comfortable receiving more of it. I’m not maxed out yet. I believe in the good intentions of others (and would have little to fear even if I didn’t), and if somebody wants to find me for whatever reason then I am perfectly happy to be found. For those who want to find me I hope to come across as a real, knowable person.

I also don’t mind a little dispersed accountability. If there is something that I have an impulse to share but find myself hesitant, I ask myself why that would be. Is it because I am ashamed of it? Is it because I am afraid of what other people will think? Or is it just not something that will add any kind of value to anybody’s life?
