Quit Looking For A Job

December 7, 2013

For the last hundred years, give or take a few decades, technological productivity has been increasing exponentially, and the obvious implication of this is that it doesn’t take all of us to run the offices and the factories and the farms any more. The state of employment is like a game of musical chairs where the number of chairs keeps shrinking. Which is perfectly fine if you realize that there are plenty of other games you could be playing.

If you are looking for a job, or have a job but want to get a new one, try this on for size: instead of looking for a job, look for ways to make a difference and live a meaningful life.

Of course, if you make a difference and find meaning through the job you have (or intend to have), then this doesn’t apply to you. Here’s how you can tell if it does:

If you feel absolutely passionate and dedicated to your job and derive a sense of meaning and satisfaction from it, then congratulations, you have found your calling.

If, however, you are on or preparing for a career path that seems like it’s the least worst option, or something that you HAVE to do because you don’t think you can do what you really want, or don’t even know what you really want, you can get a head start on your mid-life crisis and start living a meaningful existence now.

Getting hired isn’t the only game in town. It hasn’t been for a long time (if it ever was). You can choose yourself to do work that has meaning and makes a difference.

  1. Reblogged this on The Infinite Abyss(es) and commented:
I’m playing a game of catch-up with reading blogs after a busy weekend. This one, fittingly, sits well with me.

  2. Making a living is first and foremost crucial. Without a means to live, well…you get the rest.
