Do You Identify With Your Limitations?

December 10, 2013

“I’m not good at _______, that’s just who I am.”

Since the concept of self is constructed to begin with, you can, of course, identify it with any quality you want, including your perceived limitations. But what’s the point? Does it benefit you? Does it benefit anyone else?

Psychological payoffs do not always correspond to actual payoffs. In this case, the psychological payoff may be the relief of guilt due to an abdication of responsibility, but the externalized cost is an abdication of freedom. Does this really balance out under an honest accounting scheme? What if instead of abdicating responsibility you instead just jettisoned the guilt?
